A powerful back-rower, the Tongan-born and bred Timani has followed in the footsteps of two of his seven siblings - brothers Sitaleki (Wallaby #851), and Sione (Tonga) - to attain the highest of international rugby honours. Timani originally moved to Australia to play rugby league and spent two seasons with the Canterbury Bulldogs in the Toyota Cup. He then switched codes and made his Super Rugby debut with the Waratahs in 2012 before a move to the Melbourne Rebels in 2014. His strong provincial form saw him earn a Test debut in 2016, against Argentina in Perth.

Timani won his first Test cap from the bench when he replaced Dean Mumm at blindside flanker in the 36-20, 1st Test win over Argentina in Perth. Three weeks later he made his run-on debut when selected at No.8 for the 2nd Test, 33-21 against victory against Argentina at Twickenham. Timani was picked for the Spring Tour and started in the Tests against Wales, Scotland and England.

He picked up six caps over the course of the season but only one was earned in the run-on XV as Timani struggled to oust Rebels star teammate and incumbent national No.8 Sean McMahon.
