A group of Stan Pilecki’s closest rugby friends have banded together to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the former Queensland and Wallabies prop, by organising a tribute lunch which will be held on 5 August at the Kedron-Wavell Services Club at Chermside in Brisbane.
Stan, who was born in a refugee camp in Augustdorf, Germany in 1947, migrated to Australia with his family in 1950 and became the first ever Rugby player of Polish descent to represent Australia, making his debut for the Wallabies against Wales on June 11, 1978 in Brisbane.
Stan was the first ever Queensland player to reach the 100-cap mark and finished his career with a total of 122 Queensland Caps, 18 Test caps for the Wallabies, and reached 250 caps for Wests Bulldogs Rugby Club.
Last year Stan was recognised in the Australia Day honours-list, awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to rugby. So iconic is the Pilecki name in Queensland that the ‘Player’s Player’ award for the best Reds player of the Super Rugby season is named the Pilecki Medal.
The tribute lunch will fundraise for grassroots rugby, with monies raised to go towards paying for tournament registration fees, accommodation and transport costs for players. The event will also support the charity Little Windmills.
