Gregory George Shambrook

Greg Shambrook was a fearless, crash-tackling centre with good hands and a strong kick-chase game who enjoyed a brief career in Wallaby gold. Born at Bilinga, near Coolangatta, Shambrook was educated at Miami State High School, Gold Coast and The Southport School. Shambrook then joined Brisbane’s GPS Old Boys’ club and from there made his debut for Queensland against New South Wales in 1974.

When New South Wales centre Bill McKid was ruled out of the 1976, 2nd Test against Fiji in Ballymore, Shambrook was called up to make his Test debut. Solid displays in that and the 3rd Test of the series saw him win a spot on the tour to France and Italy later in the year however he did not play in either of the Tests. Shambrook remained with the Maroons the following year, one in which Australia amazingly did not play one Test match, and then left to spend two seasons with the Durban High School Old Boys’ Club in South Africa.

Shambrook made his Test debut at outside centre alongside captain Geoff Shaw in the 2nd Test, 21-9 victory over Fiji at Ballymore. He retained his position, again with Shaw, for the 3rd Test 27-17 win in Sydney.
