Born in Modena, Italy and educated in Canberra, Marco Caputo was a bull-necked and round-shouldered hooker who shon in the tight. Caputo attended Daramalan College, was a member of the ACT Schools side that won their first national title in 1988 and earned selection on the Australian Schools tour to New Zealand.

In 1992, Caputo made his ACT debut against Waikato in Hamilton and four years later played in the Brumbies’ first ever Super Rugby match, against Transvaal. A brilliant performance for the ACT when they crushed Wales 69-30 saw Caputo called up to make his Test debut against the tourists at Ballymore.

Later that year he was selected in the Wallabies’ 13 match short tour of Italy and the U.K. but did not play a Test.

In 1997, Caputo won three caps during the domestic Tests before Michael Foley assumed the No.2 jersey. Marco Caputo played five Tests for Australia in his two-year international career.

Selected in the Australian Schools squad for their tour to New Zealand.

Caputo won his first Test cap as the starting hooker in the 1st Test, 56-25 defeat of Wales in Brisbane. He scored his first Test try to become the 75th Wallaby to score a try on debut. A week later he retained his spot for the 2nd Test, 42-3 victory in Sydney.

Caputo started at No.2 in the opening three Tests of the year, two in the home series against France and the third in the first Tri Nations match against New Zealand in Christchurch.
