Otho George "Tony" Fox

‘Tony’ Fox was a fast outside back whose rugby career was impacted by persistent knee cartilage problems. Although he had a slight build Fox was a more than capable defender and consistent try scorer throughout his time with the St George club.

Born in the Riverina district of New South Wales at Ariah Park, Fox was educated at Sydney Grammar School, where he learned his rugby, and Parramatta Junior High School. Fox was also an excellent schoolboy cricketer.

Fox had a breakthrough year in 1954 after just a handful of First Grade matches when he was selected to make his debut for New South Wales against Fiji. Fox scored a try however Fiji emerged victorious 24-19. Later in the season he scored another try in his first game against Queensland.

Injuries plagued Fox for the next few seasons before he returned to his brilliant best in 1957 and was part of St. George’s one and only First Grade premiership victory. Fox’s efforts won him a place on the Fourth Wallabies tour to Britain, France and North America.

He played in 17 matches and when Ken Donald withdrew from the final international with an injured thigh, and Saxon White was unavailable, the backline was reshuffled and Fox was called up to make his Test debut in Paris.

In 1959, Fox retired from rugby due to his knee injuries.
