Rodney William Davies

A winger of spellbinding pace, Rod ‘Rocket’ Davies shared a christian name, a birthplace and a nickname with Australia’s greatest tennis player Rod Laver. Davies earned his moniker after he recorded a scorching 10.81 seconds for the 100 metres at age 17.

In his junior years Davies was an outstanding sportsman in rugby union, rugby league, boxing and athletics. He was “lucky enough” to attend to boarding school at Ipswich Grammar where, in 2006, he captained the 1st XV from fullback and went on to represent Australian Schools alongside Kurtley Beale and Quade Cooper. Davies then took up a contract with the Brisbane Broncos but returned to rugby in 2009 when he joined the Queensland Reds.

A horror run of hamstring-related injuries ruined his 2010 season however a year later he played a starring role in the team’s run to a maiden Super Rugby title. Davies was then drafted from outside the Wallaby squad to join the run-on XV at right wing as a replacement for injured James O'Connor in the one-off Test against Samoa.

In 2014, Davies left Australian rugby when he signed a two-year contract with Pro D2 French club Biarritz.

Represented Australian Schools against Tongan U18s, Fijian Schools and New Zealand Schools.

2009

Selected in the Australian squad U20s for the second-annual IRB Junior World Championships in Japan.

2011

Davies won his first and only Test cap when selected on the right wing in the 23-32 loss to Samoa in Sydney.
