Steve Kefu was a skilful inside centre with light feet, excellent evasive skills and quick hands whose family had a strong rugby pedigree. His father Fatai was a centre in the Tonga squad who toured Australia in 1973 and beat the Wallabies 16-11 in Brisbane. His elder brother Toutai (Wallaby #741) was the decorated No.8 who played 60 Tests for Australia and won the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Born in Brisbane and educated at Brisbane State High School, Steve achieved something his more famous brother did not - selection for Australian Schools. In 1999, the same year that he played Australian U21s, Kefu made his debut for Queensland against the ACT Brumbies in Canberra. In 2001 he was named in the Wallabies’ Spring Tour squad and earned a Test debut against Wales in Cardiff. Kefu returned to the starting lineup in 2003 following a shoulder reconstruction however he was overlooked for the Rugby World Cup squad. Steve Kefu played six Tests for Australia in a three-year international career.

Kefu won his first Test cap off the bench when he replaced Elton Flatley at inside centre in the 21-13 victory over Wales in Cardiff.

A shoulder reconstruction forced him to miss most of the 2002 season.

Kefu won his first run-on XV cap at inside centre and scored his first Test try in the 45-16 win against Ireland in Perth. He remained at No.12 for the ensuing Tests against Wales, England and South Africa but was a replacement for what turned out to be his final match, against New Zealand in Sydney.
