Born in Townsville to Kiwi parents, loosehead prop Toby Smith was raised in the Waikato region of New Zealand.

Strong at set-piece player and mobile with ball in hand, Smith was a World Champion at the U20s level before he went on to win the 2012 and 2013 Super Rugby titles with the Chiefs.

Smith moved to Melbourne in 2014 in an effort to realise international ambitions with his native Australia. A year later he was rewarded with a Test debut against the United States in Chicago and selection to his first Rugby World Cup.

In July, 2017 Smith left Australia when he signed a two-year contract with the Hurricanes.

Selected in the New Zealand squad for the IRB U20s World Championships in Wales.

Picked in the Wallabies’ Rugby World Cup squad Smith won a first Test cap off the bench in the warm-up match against the United States at Soldier’s Field. He won a starting XV cap in the pool match against Uruguay in Birmingham and then came on as a replacement for Scott SIo in the semi-final win over Argentina.

Smith earned a single cap off the bench in the 2nd Test loss to England in Melbourne.

He was selected for the domestic June Tests and won replacement caps against Fiji in Melbourne and Italy in Brisbane.
