The life of Dick Thornett, Wallaby #465, the youngest of the three Thornett brothers and one of Australia’s most decorated sportsmen, has been celebrated with a book titled, ‘The Natural. Richard ‘Dick’ Thornett’.
The Classics attended the Manly Writer’s Festival on Saturday where co-authors, son-in-law Brendan Morris and Academic/Independent filmmaker Stephan Wellink, spoke about the work.
In his later years, Dick settled on a farm in Millthorpe -out Orange-way - where the only signs of his sporting life were the framed photo used on the book’s cover and his Wallaby cap.
Unfortunately, Dick’s most treasured Wallaby cap was lost after he passed in 2011. Morris, with the help of Wallaby #718 Tim Wallace, near-namesake and SANZAAR CEO Brendon Morris, and former Wallaby manager Phil Thompson, managed to organise a new cap to be made, one which was presented to daughters Sophie and Leisl at a recent function in Sydney.
